Reach has produced a map of skills charities might need for income generation

As a priority, Reach will focus on addressing the income generation skills gap. We have produced a map that shows the range of skills a charity might need for successful income generation, and that a Reach volunteer can potentially bring. We are also offering free telephone consultations to help charities develop skilled volunteering roles in these areas.

Reach has 1,900 volunteers on its register who could potentially help charities address funding challenges and opportunities. However, both volunteers and charities often don’t recognise the transferable skills from the business and professional world which are highly relevant to a range of fundraising and income generation specialisms.

Although we are sometimes able to help with general fundraising roles, charities have much more chance of finding a volunteer if they can identify the specialist skills and support that they need. We would also encourage charities to consider volunteers who bring transferable skills and experience rather than insisting on fundraising experience.  Those with business backgrounds may also be able to help charities with specific income generation challenges.

Our income generation skills map (linked below) shows roles that are relevant to generating income from four main sources: fundraising, public service delivery, trading and enterprise and finance and investment.  We hope that this will help charities identify the specific skills that they need and help volunteers recognise how their experience is transferable.

This list isn’t exhaustive, and there is lots of crossover between the four areas, but we hope it will prompt you to think about the specific skills you need for the critical challenge of income generation.  For more inspiration, click on the highlighted links to see great examples of volunteering roles related to these specialisms that are on Reach’s register at the moment.

If you recognise that you need one or more of these skills, then please register a role with us and we will try our best to help.

During June and July, our volunteer placement advisors will be on hand to offer charities guidance on developing skilled volunteering roles around these specialisms.  To book a telephone consultation, please email fundingroles@reachskills.org.uk, and one of our advisors will get back to you to arrange a time to talk.

Charities who have registered general fundraising roles will also be contacted by Reach over the next two months to find out if they have more specialist needs which we can help with.
